Another more important thing would be putting helpful links at the top and in the navigation box, by changing Mediawiki:Navlinks and Mediawiki:Sidebar. Links that think might be useful are Special:AvatarUpload and Special:UpdateProfile

This is the best point to include tutorials for new users. Would it be a good idea to include some of new user guide here?
I've been thinking it would be nice to have a random tip. I just can't figure out how to create one or find one to borrow.

The main page is a very good place to show prominent links to tutorials, not to include tutorials (except for a brief one such as: Hit "Edit"; type; hit "Save"; hooray, you are now a Web publisher!) Robin Patterson 23:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
It would be great to have lots of professional and interesting images on the main page to hook users. Also a brief tutorial as Robin suggests would be good to include with a (more...) link to the full tutorial
I would like to categorise tasks by their difficulty. I'd love every new user to create their own custom profile but I think that's a bit too hard to begin with. If we suggest the simple stuff first then they can get hooked.
Just a suggestion building on what Drawde83 has said. Turn the Community portal into a Volunteer area, a place with links to where users can help out, with some elements similar to the central Volunteer portal
tht task star idea looks pretty good. My only question is if someone says they'll do something but doesn't. How does someone else pick up the task? I suppose a rule for tasks is that they'd have to be completable by one person.
Sentence case instead of Title Case in page names and headings[]
Standard Wikipedia and Wikia style is to use sentence case, not Title Case, for page names and headings. Because they get automatic format enhancements such as bolding and enlargement, they don't need the extra "noise" that unnecessary capital letters provide. Several advantages for a wiki, including the fact that you can put a link to a sentence case page in ordinary text just by adding brackets, i.e. without needing to pipe it to show capitals. Soooo....Your underlying suggestion here is that we swap every page out to Sentence case? Well if anyone else wants to do that i guess we can but it seems like a good bit of work to be honest.
Not all of them are title case. My suggestion is first that we not create any more title case page names or headings; if there's consensus on that, I will happily change existing ones to sentence case as I find them and I may even be inspired to hunt them down. I'm going to be looking into http://inside.wikia.com/wiki/CreatePage for an easier way for people to make profiles. If it works nicely It'll be a wonderful tool to have.
